Methodology & Data Sources

At Estates, we aim to provide the most accurate and up-to-date cost of living and relocation data for US cities. Our platform aggregates data from multiple authoritative sources to help you make informed decisions about where to live.

Our Data Sources

We aggregate data from the following primary sources:

  • US Census Bureau: Demographic data, population statistics, and median household income.
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS): Employment data, unemployment rates, and salary information.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT): Transit routes, stops, and commute information.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): Air quality and environmental metrics.
  • Zillow: Real-time housing prices and rental market trends (aggregated).
  • FBI Crime Data: Safety statistics and crime rates.
  • NOAA: Historical weather and climate data.

How We Calculate Metrics

Cost of Living Index

Our cost of living index is calculated by weighting various factors including housing (30%), groceries (15%), utilities (10%), transportation (10%), healthcare (5%), and miscellaneous goods and services (30%). We compare these costs against the national average to provide a relative index.

Housing & Rent

Median home prices and rental rates are updated monthly using aggregated data from major real estate platforms. We use a 12-month rolling average to smooth out seasonal fluctuations.

Safety Scores

Safety ratings are based on violent and property crime rates per 100,000 residents, sourced from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program.

Last Updated

Our database is updated regularly. The current data set was last refreshed in December 2025. We strive to maintain the highest level of data integrity and accuracy.
